greek mythology - the naiads.
it is their whispers that taunt shepherdboys and travellers, with their long fingers, to shadowy cavernous riverbed graves, take them by the hand and lead them beneath the surface; free-wheeling fresh water dwelling spirits of nature, bold, presumptuous, above all vain. vivavious and mirthful, clustering in groups of companions, combing each other’s dewy leaf-entwin’d hair with shells; it is their ceaseless chatter that sounds the proverbial babbling brook. god abus’d and half mortal they die like the mayflies that skip across their surface when their spring runs dry.
